Shillong is a hill station of Meghalaya and also the capital of this state. This popular hill station is situated at an altitude of 1496 mt above from sea level. This hill station is known as"Abode of Clouds" for its beauty. The place is surrounded by rolling hills like European settlers of Scotland. For this reason the town is also known as "Scotland of the East". This place is also located at a distance of 295 km from Kaziranga, 578 km from Siliguri, 104 km from Guwahati and 658km from Darjeeling. The most stunning beauty of this hill station makes it one of the major tourist attractions of the northeastern region of India.

Attractions Of Shillong :

1. Shilong Peak : It is the most popular and highest peak of Meghalaya. It's height 6,433 ft and located 5 km away from south part of Shillong. From this point people can visit the beauty of town and countryside. 

2. Butterfly Museum : An old museum located in Shillong known as Butterfly Museum, established in the 1930s. It is the best museum of Shillong which is dedicated to butterflies and moths. This museum has 16,00 species of butterflies, moths and other insects. This museum is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. -4:30 p.m. but Saturday  10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. 

3. Umiam Lake : This lake is famous for it's adventure and beauty. It is also famous as Barapani or Big Water. This lake brings with it all the facilities of  water cycling, boating, kayaking etc. This lake contains a beautiful ecosystem but at present days population and pollution, blockage of natural drainage system, deforestation destroys the balance of ecosystem of this place. 

4. Botanical Garden : One of the beautiful and popular garden of Shillong. 

5. Golf Course : One of the oldest and famous Golf Course of India. Developed in 1889 as a nine hole course. 

6. Ward's Lake : Located at the center of  the city it is one of the popular travel attraction and short garden nearby. It is also very famous for boating. 

Other attractions are Sohpetbneng Peak, Cherrapunjee, Lady Hydari Park, Elephant Falls, Cathedral of Mary help of Christians, Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Culture, Spread Eagle Falls, Sweet Falls, Beadon Falls etc. 

Best Time To Visit : 

Shillong can be visit throughout  the year, but best time is October, November and between March and April.

By Air: Shillong does'nt have any airport within the city. The nearest airport is  Umroi airport near Barapani, which is 25 km away from the main city. The second nearest airport is Guwahati, which is located 125 km from the city. These airports are well connected with other major cities of India. 

By Rail:  The nearest railway station is in Guwahati, 104 km from the city. This railway route is linked with other major cities of India. From station you can hire a taxi or local vehicle to reach Shillong. 

By Road : The local govt. provide a good service of private and govt buses to reach Shillong from Guwahati bus stop. It can be take 3-3:30 hours to reach the place. There are also has the facility of taxis at every spot.
